‘AI’ is not inevitable. It is a result of human decisions.
Tech companies, governments and media tell us that we must accept and embrace extractive and harmful AI.
But the future is made from shared decisions that need not, should not, cannot, be left to the few.
This site is the beginning of a work in progress. We are creating a space from the grassroots up: a community space for the many people and organisations around the world who are working on challenging the inevitability of extractive AI. We want to explore the different strategies and tactics being used and reactions and results from across the globe so others can learn, connect, support, and collaborate.
This initiative accompanies the AI Resist List, a collaboration between a group of researchers, journalists, and critical scholars spanning seven time zones to document stories of resistance against the AI industry around the world.
Our first stage is a community blog, which is open to those wishing to share news, tips, research, requests on their challenge and remagining projects.

The AI Resist List was made possible through funding from Empire of AI journalist Karen Hao, and The Refugee Law Lab at York University. It had in-kind support from the Distributed AI Research (DAIR) Institute and We and AI.
We and AI are now stewarding this space to surface the stories, tactics, narratives, community they encountered through their research on Resisting, Refusing, Reclaiming, Reimagining: Charting Challenges to Narratives of AI Inevitability. This proposes a framework for those challenging the power dynamics underpinning AI technologies, and illustrates that there are many ways individuals and collectives can influence how technology is developed and used.
